FIRM OVERVIEW
Founded in 1950 by Evan S. Williams of Troy, Pennsylvania, the
law firm of Brann, Williams, Caldwell & Sheetz has steadily
grown through the years to its current make-up of seven attorneys.
Its founder, a graduate of Cornell Law School, served in the Pennsylvania
State Legislature and as Judge of the Bradford County Court of Common
Pleas for 16 years. He was a sole practitioner for 15 years before
he was joined in 1964 by the firm's current senior partner, Gerald
W. Brann. Mr. Brann, a graduate of Notre Dame Law School, and a
native of Canton, Pennsylvania, had previously practiced in Philadelphia
before forming this partnership with Judge Williams. The two-person
firm concentrated their practice in the areas of real estate, tax,
and estate planning and administration. Their offices were located
on the second floor of a small building in downtown Troy.
In 1969, a year after Evan Williams left the firm to become President
Judge of Bradford County, his son, Evan S. Williams, Jr., also a
graduate of Cornell Law School, returned to Troy to practice with
Mr. Brann. After one year, this two person law firm moved to its
current location at 111 West Main Street where they were joined
by an experienced and well respected lawyer, Robert R. Vineski of
Canton, Pennsylvania. The firm, then known as Vineski, Brann, and
Williams maintained offices in both Troy and Canton, Pennsylvania.
In 1976, Harold G. Caldwell graduated from the Dickinson School
of Law and joined the firm. His presence supplemented the litigation
side of the practice. Richard D. Sheetz, the former Chief Public Defender
of Bradford County, and a graduate of the Dickinson School of Law,
joined the firm in 1987, bringing additional courtroom experiance to the
partnership.
In 1990, Mr. Brann's eldest son, Matthew W. Brann, graduated from
the Dickinson School of Law and returned home to join the firm after
completing federal and state court clerkships. A few years later
David J. Brann, the youngest son of the firm's senior partner, graduated
from Toledo Law School and joined the firm. Most recently,
Evan S. Williams III, a graduate of the Cornell Law School, returned to
Troy to join the firm after practicing for five years with the firm of
Gardner, Carton & Douglas in Chicago.
Currently, composed of the three members of the Brann family, Mr.
Caldwell, Mr. Sheetz, and the Williamses, the firm is the largest
law firm in the northern tier of Pennsylvania east of Erie. Between
its Troy and Canton offices, it employs a staff of 15 individuals
from the community.
The law firm's practice has grown to include real estate, corporate
and commercial matters, personal injury, wrongful death, estate
planning and administration, family law and general civil litigation.
The members of the firm have significant experience in transactional
practice and dispute resolution and avoidance, and litigate in the
state courts of Bradford, Tioga, Lycoming, Wyoming, Susquehanna,
Clinton and Sullivan counties, and in the United States District
Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
